At HMGS Dermatology, our Dermatology experts are here to discuss an important topic: summertime acne management. We offer South Jersey practical tips and enduring solutions for the summer breakout season.
A Peek into our Climate and Acne Correlation
Understanding the South Jersey weather is important for optimal skincare. South Jersey exhibits a humid climate, especially during summers. Such dampness often triggers oil production in our skin, leading to clogged pores and acne outbreaks. Hence, modifying our skincare routine to fit our locale is crucial. We also have many days of sunny days at the Jersey Shore, swim clubs, South Jersey lakes, the Delaware River, and many golf courses, pickle ball courts and tennis courts. The sun can lead to excessive dryness of the epidermis and lead to more acne breakouts.
Summer Acne Management Advice from HMGS Dermatology Experts
Dealing with acne during the summer can be challenging due to increased sweat and oil production. Here are five tips to manage summer acne effectively:
-
Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin stay hydrated and flush out toxins that contribute to breakouts. Proper hydration supports overall skin health and helps balance oil production, which can reduce acne.
-
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Opt for a gentle cleanser to remove sweat, oil, and impurities from your skin. Cleansing twice daily can help prevent clogged pores and reduce the risk of breakouts. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which can irritate the skin and worsen acne.
-
Consider Exfoliation
Exfoliating your skin 2-3 times a week sometimes helps remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. Patients often find chemical exfoliants with salicylic acid or glycolic acid can penetrate the pores and reduce acne.
-
Avoid Heavy Makeup
Heavy or greasy makeup can contribute to clogged pores and exacerbate acne. Opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic products and remove makeup thoroughly before bed to prevent breakouts.
-
Apply a Non-Comedogenic Sunscreen
Use a broad-spectrum, oil-free sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage and avoid sunburn, which can trigger inflammation and worsen acne. Sunscreen also helps prevent dark spots (hyperpigmentation) that can result from acne inflammation.
Why does the Sun sometime seem to help my acne?
Ultraviolet light is by nature anti-inflammatory. In addition, tanning can cover up some of the visible blemishes of acne. But sometimes it wasn’t the sunlight at all that helped your acne, but the less stressful days of your vacation or long weekend. Stress of work/office/school can definitely trigger acne. Unfortunately, ultraviolet light from the sun definitively causes skin cancer and is not at all a recommended modality to treat acne.
Can I use my Prescription Topical and Oral therapy in the Summer?
Yes, but certain medications including topical retinoids (eg tretinoin, Differin, Retin-A), Accutane, and doxycycline can lead to an increased risk for sunburns.

Understanding Accutane
One potent treatment we offer is Accutane. While Accutane (isotretinoin) can make you more sensitive to the sun, with proper protection, severe acne patients can safely take this in the summertime. Accutane reduces the size and activity of oil glands in the skin, leading to decreased oil production and fewer clogged pores. Accutane often causes dry skin, bloody noses, and chapped lips which are more manageable in the humid weather.
