While lipomas are almost always harmless, they can be annoying or painful, or cause self-consciousness. Lipoma removal is a great option to completely remove the lipoma, ensuring that it does not return. Our board-certified dermatologists at HMGS Dermatology are highly skilled in lipoma removal procedures, so you can get your life and skin back to normal.

What are Lipomas?

Lipomas are fatty lumps that grow slowly between your skin and muscle layer that can grow anywhere on the body. While they are usually harmless, they can become painful or grow in uncomfortable areas. If this is the case, lipoma removal through a minimally invasive surgical excision procedure is a great option for a patient with an uncomfortable or annoying lipoma.

Lipomas can be taken out using a local anesthetic and a small incision.

How do I Know if I Have a Lipoma?

Lipomas are distinct from other skin conditions, such as a cyst, because they are an accumulation of fat cells in seemingly random parts of the body. They are generally situated just underneath the skin and usually pop up on the neck, shoulders, abdomen, arms, and thighs. They are also soft to the touch, and are typically less than 2 inches in diameter, though they can grow over time. This is in contrast to cysts, which tend to be more rubbery and small.

If your lipoma becomes painful, grows quickly, is red or swollen, or is hard to the touch, you should see a doctor immediately.

Who is a Good Candidate for Lipoma Removal?

Lipomas most commonly occur on individuals who are between 40 and 60 years old, however, they can happen at any age. They are also more common in people with a family history of lipomas. If you believe you have a lipoma and are bothered by the look or feel of it, you can benefit from lipoma removal. Please contact our office today to schedule your consultation.

What to Expect During Lipoma in New Jersey?

A bothersome or painful lipoma can be removed surgically. Prior to the treatment, our medical dermatologist will examine the formation and confirm that it’s a lipoma that can be removed through an incision.

During the procedure, local anesthesia will be used to ensure you are comfortable. Then, a small incision will be made through which the lipoma will be removed either by excision or liposuction. In some cases, lipomas can be larger than 2 inches, which we call giant lipomas. These can cause nerve pain and cause self-consciousness.

Following your lipoma removal, the fat cells are often sent to a lab for analysis to make sure the lipoma is harmless.

Recovery From Lipoma Removal

There is generally little downtime required following lipoma removal, depending on the size of it. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort may occur, though cold compresses can help to minimize these effects. Most patients are able to return to work or school the next day, though you should avoid exercise for about a week. While scarring is usually minimal, this ultimately depends on the size of the lipoma that was removed.
