At HMGS Dermatology, our mission is to not only provide exceptional patient care but also educate future dermatologists and students on highly advanced and effective dermatology practices. Warren R. Heymann MD founded the Dermatology Residency Program at Cooper University Hospital over two decades ago in order to fulfill this mission. HMGS dermatologists work as teaching faculty at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, dedicating their time and sharing their wealth of experiences with our exceptional residents and future physicians.
Dermatology Residency Program
Dermatology residents at Cooper Medical School have the opportunity to work in a University health system that cares for some of the most complex cases in the region. We also invite medical students and residents in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Family Medicine, and Podiatry to train alongside our Faculty.
Our consult service takes care of common and rare dermatologic diseases in hospitalized patients. Inpatient medical dermatology experience is augmented by cases transferred from outside hospitals throughout Southern NJ. We are one of the few Dermatology groups in the region that regularly treats dermatologic emergencies in the hospital.
In Camden, NJ, our residents are trained in medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, dermatologic surgery, and dermatologic oncology alongside respected and knowledgeable attending physicians. We are experienced in treating difficult cases including psoriasis, lupus, melanoma, atopic dermatitis, acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, basal cell carcinoma, drug reactions, squamous cell carcinoma, and hemangiomas.
At our general dermatology hours in Marlton, NJ, residents receive foundational training in advanced medical dermatology, cutaneous oncology, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. Residents can also participate in clinical research, peer-reviewed journal writing, and other academic pursuits. Exposure to some of the most complex reconstructions and a wide variety of cases leaves our residents prepared for all situations once they graduate.
Faculty and Staff
Our program gives residents the unique opportunity to learn in a 2:1 ratio of residents to faculty. Residents work closely with nationally recognized faculty members who are board-certified in general dermatology, pediatric dermatology, dermatopathology, and Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology. Our HMGS team and the entire faculty at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University have contributed significantly to the dermatologic literature and are regularly invited to speak at national conferences.
Faculty are also fellows of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatology Surgery, the International Society of Dermatology, and the Society of Pediatric Dermatology. The Chief of the Procedural Dermatology and Mohs Surgery team is a former president of the American Society of Dermatology Surgery and a world-renowned Mohs surgeon. Dr. Heymann has been a Board Director at the American Board of Dermatology since 2017.
Our mission is to serve the Camden community and beyond as medical providers and advocates for the underserved population. Teaching our residents how to address the patient and the disease is equally important. At Cooper University Hospital, you will always receive compassionate care using the very best medical treatments.
The Dermatology Residency Program at Cooper Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and fulfills all training requirements set by The American Board of Dermatology. Residents are encouraged to take the American Board of Dermatology certifying examination upon completion of their residency.
