Over time, the skin ages and loses elasticity, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. Skin laxity can affect the eyes, leading to droopy upper lids and an aged appearance. Upneeq is a unique and new treatment that can lift the lids without any invasive measures or downtime. Even better, treatment can be performed in the comfort of your own home!
What is Upneeq?
Upneeq is an FDA-approved prescription eye drop used to treat eyelid ptosis (droopy eyelids). The innovative ingredient in Upneeq is oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.1% ophthalmic solution 0.1%. This makes it the only FDA-approved eye drop for this condition. Oxymetazoline triggers the Müller’s muscle in the upper eyelid to contract, causing the lid to be pulled upward about 1mm.
Although this sounds like a minuscule difference, involuntary eyelid muscle contraction creates a significant change in the appearance of the eyes. Patients can enjoy a more refreshed appearance without sagging lids.
Who is a Good Candidate for Upneeq?
Adult men and men with acquired ptosis caused by natural aging and those who naturally have low-lying eyelids are candidates for Upneeq. Botox-induced droopy eyelids can also be improved with Upneeq. People with high blood pressure, heart disease, Sjögren’s syndrome, and narrow-angle glaucoma might not be candidates for Upneeq. We will help you determine whether you are a candidate at your consultation.
What to Expect During Upneeq Treatment?
Upneeq treatment is performed daily at home after the eye drops have been prescribed. The Upneeq eye drops come in single-use vials that are very easy to use. Patients cut open the packaging, pull their lower lid down gently, and apply one drop to each eye. After applying each drop, keep your head tilted up and your eye closed for about 30 seconds so that the drops can be absorbed into the eye without falling out.
If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Upneeq. You must also be careful not to scratch your eye with the packaging so it might be helpful to have someone guide you during the first few applications.
Upneeq Recovery
If you wear contacts, wait 15 minutes to put them back in after applying Upneeq. Results can be seen in as little as a few minutes for some patients or within two hours. The slight lift to your lids will last for about 8 hours, giving you an all-day refreshment.
If you have dry eyes, blurred vision, eye redness, or eye irritation from Upneeq, please call our office immediately. These side effects are rare but will require medical attention if they occur.
