As experienced dermatologists at HMGS Dermatology, we know that starting Accutane (isotretinoin) treatment for acne can feel overwhelming with so much information—and misinformation—out there. Whether you’re a parent considering options for your teen, or an adult struggling with persistent breakouts, understanding the facts about Accutane is essential. Here are five important things everyone should know before beginning their Accutane journey, so you can be informed and reassured throughout the process.
1. Blood work is not required every month.
This used to be the case. Currently it is more typical to order just 2 sets of labs-at initiation and then one more set 8 weeks into a course. Monitoring potential side effects, particularly concerning cholesterol, liver enzymes, and blood counts, can occur more frequently based on individual results and other health problems.
2 . Accutane “purge” is more often seen on TikTok than our office.
While worsening of acne can be seen in some Accutane patients, this is certainly not the norm. There are ways your HMGS Dermatologist can help your avoid sudden exacerbations.
3. Accutane (isotretinoin) was approved by the FDA in 1982 for the treatment of severe acne.
This is not a new drug on the market. HMGS Dermatology has great confidence that this drug’s pros and cons are well-established. Ask us anything you want to know about Accutane and chances are we have the answer.
4. Not every Accutane patient takes birth control.
Female patients who are are capable of conceiving and are sexually active must be on 2 forms of birth control. Male patients and female patients who choose abstinence are not required to take birth control. The conversation regarding the importance of avoiding pregnancy while taking Accutane will be discussed with your HMGS Dermatology provider.
5. Having pre-existing mental health disorders does not necessarily disqualify you from taking Accutane.
Many of our Accutane patients have a history of disorders such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Of course, Accutane is a medication that requires careful consideration for individuals with a history of depression, and it should be used with caution. Your HMGS Dermatology provider will often collaborate with mental health professionals to ensure a safer approach. The risks and benefits will be discussed at your initial visit.
