What is Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra?
Dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN) is a benign skin condition that typically looks like small, dark, raised spots that appear on the face, neck, and upper torso. It is most prevalent in those with darker skin tones. The spots can be smooth, firm, black, or dark brown. It can often be mistaken for small seborrhoeic keratoses, because it looks identical. The spots are not cancerous or harmful, but are often removed due to cosmetic reasons.
The cause of dermatosis papulosa nigra is currently unknown, but it is thought to be genetic, due to the overgrowth of skin cells, or due to increased melanin production.
Who is Most Affected by Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra?
DPN is most common in adults with darker skin. This can include African Americans, Filipinos, Mexicans, and those of Vietnamese background who have highly-pigmented skin. It affects about 35% of Black Americans. The skin condition is also prevalent in females and in those who have a family history of DPN. Additionally, if you’ve been exposed to the sun a lot, DPN can be more common.
DPN typically starts in adolescence and continues as you age, with the number of lesions and their size growing.
Benefits of Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra Treatment
At HMGS Dermatology, we offer several different treatment options for dermatosis papulosa nigra. Which one is right for you will depend on where the lesions are, how many there are, and your skin type. Surgical removal, laser therapy (including our KTP laser), and curettage are just a few treatment options.
The benefits you can expect from the treatments include the following:
- Custom treatment: At HMGS Dermatology, we will create a custom treatment plan that suits your exact needs. From surgical removal to laser treatment, our expert providers will ensure your treatment is right for you.
- Clearer skin: After your DPN treatment, your dark spots will fade or be erased entirely, leaving you with much clearer skin.
- Boost in self-confidence: Many of our patients who have struggled with DPN notice a significant boost in their confidence, especially if their spots made them feel self-conscious.
- Permanent removal: Once the dark spots are removed (especially with surgical removal), they will not return. You may see new spots, but the old ones will not return.
