Checking Off the Skin Check for the New Year

When it comes to your skin health, nothing is more important than early detection and effective treatment of skin cancer. At HMGS Dermatology we are committed to providing top-notch care and the most advanced skin cancer treatments available. Let’s explore what we look for during a skin cancer check and what treatment options you can expect from our expert team.

The Importance of Regular Skin Check-ups

Self-skin examinations are your first line of defense against skin cancer. Looking for the ABCDEs (Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variegation, Diameter >6mm, Evolving) of melanoma are a great start. For patients at high risk or have trouble with self-checks, a visit to HMGS Dermatology could be life-saving. These in office check-ups allow our dermatology providers to closely examine your entire skin surface. We use visual pattern recognition, photography, and dermoscopy to identify suspicious pigmented lesions, atypical moles, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and pre-cancerous lesions (actinic keratoses).  Early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

More frequent examinations are often recommended if you have a personal or family history of skin cancer(s), significant tanning bed/sun exposure, or certain genetic conditions.

Advanced Skin Cancer Treatments at HMGS Dermatology

If skin cancer is detected, our team of experts offers a range of advanced treatment options tailored to your specific needs:

1. Excisional Surgery

This common treatment involves surgically removing the cancerous tissue along with a margin of healthy skin to ensure all cancer cells are eliminated. Often the skin is stitched up and all that remains is a scar.

2. Mohs Surgery

For larger, recurring, or high-risk skin cancers, Mohs micrographic surgery offers optimal precision. HMGS Dermatology collaborates with skilled Mohs surgeons to provide comprehensive care. The Mohs procedure removes the cancer in stages until all the cancer cells are cleared.

3. Cryosurgery

This quick, anesthesia-free treatment uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy superficial skin cancers and precancerous lesions like actinic keratoses.

4. Curettage and Electrodesiccation

This technique involves the combination of serial scraping away layers of cancer cells with a curette, followed by electrical destruction of any remaining cancer cells.

5. Topical and Intralesional Therapy

HMGS Dermatology offers photodynamic therapy, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) cream, imiquimod cream, and intralesional methotrexate and 5-FU for select superficial skin cancers and pre-cancers.

6. Radiation Therapy

For patients who can’t undergo surgical procedures due to advanced health conditions, we may recommend radiation therapy to target and eliminate cancer cells. We work with talented radiation oncologists at University hospitals to achieve optimal outcomes.

7. Oral Therapy

For patients with locally advanced basal cell carcinoma, smoothened inhibitors such as vismodegib and sonidegib, are medications that can offer an alternative to surgery. Oral acitretin can be used for eruptive squamous atypia/keratoacanthomas.

Protecting Your Skin After Treatment

After skin cancer treatment, it’s crucial to take steps to protect your skin from future damage. Our dermatologists recommend:

  • Avoiding sun exposure during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Wearing broad-spectrum (SPF 30+) sunscreen year-round
  • Covering up with protective hats and clothing when in bright sunlight
  • Avoiding tanning beds
  • Performing regular self-examinations to monitor your skin for changes

Winter Skin Care and Cancer Prevention

Even during the cooler months, it’s important to maintain vigilant skin care practices. Winter sun can still cause damage, especially when reflected off snow. Continue using sunscreen and protective measures throughout the year to keep your skin healthy and reduce your risk of skin cancer.
